Applications and Implications//

What will it do?

My final project will be a modular panel consisted of e-textiles that they interact with each other, with space and with the users. The nature of these smart textiles is not only fashion oriented but works as a pallete that indicates the use of smart fabrics also in other uses , for example architecture and design.

Who's done what beforehand?

Smart textiles and their applications are constantly in development and a lot of artits and ingeniers are working constanly on similar projects. I belive the most important thing to ask and answer is why we want to call them smart textiles?and in which way they interact? And WHY to interact? My purpose is to use the smart fabrics as an architecture SPACE element that will break the monolithic surfaces that define a building even until our modern days. Ventilation and light is two parameters that break the monolithic walls and connects the interior with the exterior space. For my final project i would like to work with electomagnets which allow movement with no mechanical system and optic fibers. An artist who inspired me is Pauline Van Dongen and Studio Roosegaarde fromthe Netherlands. They treat smart textiles as fashion items but i belive that is a good start for me to support on their ideas and develop smart-space oriented textiles.

What will you design?

My smart fabric modular pallet will start with two main textiles. An optic fiber fabric connecteg to an RGB led and a photosensor and another e-textiles made out of a lot of flipping parts that will flip due to electromagnetic field that will be uplied via a button.

What materials and components will be used?

The materials and components that will be used are : fabric, fabric vinyl, enamelled copper wire 0.1mm, enamelled copper wire 0.2mm, copper foil, 3d print filaments, soldering wire, leds, opric fiber fabric, optic fibers, magnets, batteries, copper plates, cables, wood, acrylic, textile glue, normal glue, threat, sewing kit, photosensor, button, microcontrollers, resistors, capasitors, relays, arduino, arduino bread board.

Where will come from?

The majority of the materials and components will come from the local fab lab since i want to make sure that i create evrything inside the fab lab concepts and values. The only thing that i have to buy is the optic fiber fabric and the optic fibers since is something not easy to find and not provided by fab lab (yet.... ;-)

How much will they cost?

The cost of the materials is 241,5 euro since the optic fiber fabric unfortunatelly is an expensive item (130 euros for a sample of 40*60 cm).

What parts and systems will be made?

The pallete will consists of an optic fiber fabric and a vinyl fabric mask sewed on the top. The fabric will be connected with a photosensor that sends the message to the led to turn on. The second fabric will be a system of electromagnets under a transparent fabric and regular magnets integrated under the second fabric. An acrulic frame will framethe two smart textiles and a control panel will regulate all the actions (button, photosencor.) Another wood engraved sign will expleuin graphically the interaction of the textiles.

What processes will be used?

The processes that will be used are, 3d printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, press heater, electronics production, electronics design, input and output devices, embedded programming, coding, 2d and 3d design, interface and application programming.

What questions need to be answered?

The questions that need to be answer are can we call this textile smart and why? and how could we use them as a space element in architecture and design?

How will it be evaluated?

I wish that my final project will be evaluated according to the innovation of the idea and the way that incorporated all the different weeks and machines of the fab lab.
